Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised After Delhi Protest Intensifies During Hunger Strike

Education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi on Saturday after his health reportedly deteriorated during a hunger strike that had continued for more than 20 days. Authorities said the move was made following medical advice and court directions, while some protesters alleged that he was removed against his wishes. 

Why Was Sonam Wangchuk Protesting?

Sonam Wangchuk had joined a protest alongside supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The demonstrators are demanding accountability over alleged examination paper leaks and are calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. 

Police Shift Wangchuk to Hospital

Delhi Police stated that Wangchuk’s health had worsened after a prolonged hunger strike and that he was shifted to the hospital based on medical advice and a Delhi High Court direction to monitor his condition and intervene if required. 

Protesters React

Supporters at Jantar Mantar objected to the removal, saying Wangchuk was taken without his consent. After the incident, more protesters gathered at the site, and CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke announced that he would begin an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity. 

Security Tightened in Delhi

Ahead of a planned “Sansad Chalo” march, Delhi Police increased security across the capital by deploying additional personnel, installing barricades, and stepping up surveillance to maintain law and order.
